Colônia's cemetery

Atualizado: 29 de nov. de 2019

Non-Catholic German immigrants, due to the need to bury their loved ones, built in 1829 the first Protestant cemetery in Brazil. Tumbled by the city's historical heritage, it preserves the history of the pioneer settlers inscribed on the original tombstones and the cast iron crosses at the Royal São João de Ipanema Iron Factory, which worked in Iperó, in the inner of São Paulo, until 1895. The tombstones built in masonry More than 180 years old, brick walls resemble church towers or small religious temples. From 1845, the cemetery had a part reserved to also receive Catholics. When we get there, we can talk to André, who has worked there for over 15 years, and makes a walking tour of the cemetery showing the tombstones and telling the curiosities of the people who are buried. Also the cemetery has the community library “Paths of Reading” very famous in the region. The library holds exhibitions of plays, arts, movies and soiree.
